A commander in Afghanistan confirms that Danish Siddiqui was killed on Friday while covering a clash between Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters near a border crossing with Pakistan.

The Afghan special forces were engaged in retaking the main market area of Spin Boldak when Siddiqui and a senior officer were killed in a Taliban crossfire, according to the official in conversion with Reuters.

“We are urgently seeking more information, working with authorities in the region,” Reuters President Michael Friedenberg and Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni conveyed in their statement.

Siddiqui was part of the Reuters Photography Team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for documenting the Rohingya refugee crisis. His work included depicting wars in Afghanistan and Iran, the Rohingya refugee crisis, the Hong Kong protests and Nepal earthquakes. He also recently published photographs depicting the tragic situation of covid-19 during the second wave in India.
