India’s hopes of winning a table tennis medal at the Tokyo Olympics quickly disappeared. In the eighth mixed doubles final held here on Saturday, Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost to Chinese Taipei’s No. 3 seeds Lin Yunju and Cheng Yiqing.
The Indians had to count every opportunity as a good opponent but failed to do so after leading 51 and 53 in the first two games. In the end, the Chinese Taipei team won easily with 118, 116, 115, and 114.
The power of 19-year-old Jeremy Lin was too much for the No. 12 seeded pair, Sarat and Manica, who entered the Olympics after winning the qualifying round.
The Indians did not respond to Lin’s forehand and backhand.
