Election Commission of India has issued a notice to Mamata Banerjee for ‘openly asking for votes on communal grounds’ while campaigning for the ongoing elections in Tarakeshwar in Hooghly District.
EC has asked CM Mamata Banerjee to explain her remarks within 48 hours of receipt of the notice. The notice is based on the complaint by a BJP delegation led by Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. As per the poll body, the comments violated the RP Act and the Model of Code of Conduct.
PM Modi also took a swipe at Mamata Banerjee’s comments. Muslims constitute around 27 percent of the total Bengal population and have been a reliable vote bank in the elections. But due to the arrival of two Muslim leaders, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi and a religious leader from Furfura Sharif have complicated the matter.
